About Us / FAQs
Club for the Cure is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 at Simon Fraser University to fundraise for cancer research and to give out to the community. Motivated by the many people in our lives who have been affected by cancer, the club was formed in support of the BC Cancer Foundation and other cancer-related charities. Club for the Cure is a community-orientated group with membership from SFU, UBC, UVIC and a sister club in Egypt. Currently the club in Canada has a membership of about 500 people and is actively recruiting new members. Working together as a team, students will create strong relationships and enhance their university experience.
Why should I join?
This club could be your way of expressing your support for the fight against cancer, while at the same time, building strong relationships with your peers and enhancing your university experience.
What do we do?
We combine our efforts and creative ideas in fundraising for cancer research and raising awareness for cancer, while having lots of fun! We also take part in other cancer-related activities, and social activities.
Who do the funds we raise go to?
In a normal event, our fundraising efforts will support the BC Cancer Foundation. However, we have also fundraised for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the Terry Fox Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, etc.
Can you give me some examples of the events we'll be doing?
One event we've done annually is the CIBC Run for the Cure for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. We've also done tours of the BC Cancer Agency in Surrey (Fraser Valley Cancer Centre), as well as the BC Research Centre and Vancouver Cancer Centre, providing some new insight into the field and having many of our cancer-related questions answered. Basically, we put whatever interesting ideas we may come up with (i.e. date auctions, selling food, etc.) into action to support the cancer cause. You can visit our activities page to find out more.
So I'm interested in supporting the fight against cancer, but what if I want to support another cause as well?
If it will be a club activity, then it must be brought up in a club meeting, on our club's online forum, or through e-mail. For example, if you would like to support the fight against AIDS, or simply get together to work in a soup kitchen, it's all okay if club members want to do so.
How much is the membership fee?
The membership fee has been abolished since Fall 2006. There are no current plans to bring it back.
When are meetings? And what if my availability isn't that great?
Please e-mail us your preferences. You don't necessarily have to be present at EVERY meeting and help with EVERY event. Just put in whatever effort you can afford to do. Keep in mind that most of our correspondence will happen through e-mail, and meetings normally only occur for events.
